How do I calculate the property taxes in Butler County?

Step 1 - Find your real estate assessment on the Butler County Assessment Page (a new window will open up in your browser)

Step 2 - Find the local, school, and Butler County tax rates

Step 3 - Draw a simple chart like the one below.

Step 4 - Working with decimals can be awfully confusing and subject to error, so divide the result by 1,000 to arrive at the annual tax bill for the Butler County properties.

Butler County PA - Property Tax Calculation
TAXING BODY ASSESSMENT   TAX MILLS   DIVIDE BY 1,000 ANNUAL TAX
ADAMS Township \$16,760 X 3.75 = \$62,850.00 \$62.85
Mars Area School District \$16,760 X 99 = \$1,659,240.00 \$1,659.24
Butler County \$16,760 X 23.628 = \$396,005.28 \$396.01
TOTAL     126.378     \$2,118.10

What's a mill and why do I need to divide by 1,000?
A "mill" is one thousandths or - .001, however, Butler County lists the tax rates as:

Butler County PA - Property Tax Calculation
TAXING BODY LISTED TAX MILLS   CORRECT DECIMAL
Mars Area School District 99   0.099
Butler County 23.628   0.023628
TOTAL 126.378   0.126378

So just add up the tax millage and multiply the total by the Butler County assessment and divide by 1,000

Or you can use the Butler County Tax Calculator

I chuckle every time I receive this e-mail.
